23 September, 2026
Heading out for a hike? A little preparation goes a long way. Here are 10 essentials Arron, our Summit Guide, recommends bringing on the trail.
Know Your Route
Before heading out, know where you’re going and what to expect. Research your route, know roughly how long it should take and make sure someone knows where you’re going.
The 10 Essentials
First Aid Kit
Bring a basic first aid kit for dealing with cuts, scrapes or other injuries while you’re out on the trail.Reflective Blanket or Bivvy Shelter
These are small and lightweight, but can help keep you warm and protected if you unexpectedly have to spend more time outside.Knife or Multi-Tool
A small knife or multi-tool is useful to have with you for repairs and other unexpected situations.Whistle
A whistle is small, easy to carry and can help people locate you if you need to call for help.Water Bottle
Bring enough water for your hike, and consider carrying a water filter so you have another option if needed.Food
Bring enough food for your hike and always pack a little extra in case you’re out longer than you planned.Emergency Fire Kit
Carry something you can use to get a fire started in an emergency.Headlamp
Even if you don’t plan on hiking in the dark, bring a headlamp. Plans can change and you may end up on the trail later than expected.Map and Compass
Bring a map and compass as a backup for navigation rather than relying entirely on your phone.Extra Clothing
Bring extra layers to stay warm and dry, and make sure you have something bright or highly visible that can help you be seen if you need assistance.
A little preparation can make a big difference. Know your route, bring the right gear and be prepared for things to change while you’re out there.
