Passholder Profile: VancityWild

“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” - John Muir

Brie and Reuben are the real-life couple behind the community, VancityWild. They joined us as passholders this year and we had plenty of questions for these trendy adventure-seekers. Fun fact, this is how Reuben proposed to Brie.

What attracts you to your adventures?

When we first met, hiking and adventuring was a big part of how we got to know one another, and it quickly became our biggest shared passion. The great thing about outdoor adventures is that, even if you’ve been to the same place a million times, seeing it in different seasons and even times of day can produce an entirely new experience. When we started VancityWild, we didn’t realize was that our followers would end up motivating us more than anything else; motivating us not only by sharing their own spectacular adventures, but also by encouraging us to constantly continue to seek new and exciting ventures and to push our boundaries with quality content.

Favourite activity at Sea to Sky Gondola?

The gondola itself! The view on the ride up is so breathtaking as you rise high above Howe Sound. Once you’re at the top, it’s so incredible to be able to look down on the Chief and the city of Squamish, a perspective that you wouldn’t normally see. As photography is a big part of what we do, the suspension bridge and the trails in the area offer such perfect backdrops for our images.

Favourite place in the PNW that you visited in the last year?

One of our favourite places that we have visited in the last year would have to be Joffre Lakes. The entire hike to each lake is beautiful in any season, with striking turquoise blue waters in the summer, and stunning ice covered lakes in the winter. It’s one of those places that reminds us of how lucky we are to live in BC!

Recommeded read?
Beyond the Horizon. It tells the story of Colin Angus who became the first human to circumnavigate the planet using only human power. He started and finished his journey in Vancouver, which hits especially close to home! This book demonstrates the capability of the human spirit and inspires us to constantly push ourselves and step outside of our comfort zone.

What resources do you recommend for inspiring Instagram Influencers?
When we realized what our account could become, we reached out to some fellow successful Instagrammers that we look up to. Having mentors with real experience was everything to us and made the biggest impact on our path. As for guidance, our biggest piece of advice is consistency, consistency, consistency! Gather quality content, and post it regularly. It's important to imagine what you think your audience would want to see, and figure out a way to start conversation. Using the right hashtags, engaging with your followers and building a community on your feed will make all the difference.

Most worthwhile investment you’ve ever made? Investment in time, energy or money.

The most worthwhile investment we’ve ever made was probably when we decided to splurge and purchase our cameras, lenses, and photography gear. Photography is not an inexpensive hobby to have, and it is a major investment of time, learning, and effort. The payoff, however, makes it worth it! It has changed how we adventure, and it has completely opened up a world of opportunity in terms of our careers.

Do you have a saying that you think of often?
