How Do You Stay Safe on the Trails in Summer Heat?

13 August, 2025

Summer on our trails is beautiful — and brutally hot. Bring water, dress smart, avoid midday heat, and know your limits.

What to Pack?

  • At least 2 litres of water per person. Dehydration can happen quickly in the heat.

  • Wide-brim hat and light, breathable clothing to help protect against sunburn and overheating.

When to Hike?

The alpine is especially beautiful at sunrise and in the late afternoon light — and it’s cooler, too. Start early or head out later in the day to avoid peak heat.

How to Stay Safe?

  • Listen to your body. Headaches, dizziness or nausea are signs to stop and rest.

  • Rest in shade whenever possible.

  • Turn back if you feel unwell. The mountain will be here tomorrow.

Prepared hikers share one thing in common: respect for the mountain. Pack smart, pace yourself, and stay hydrated. A safe hike is a great hike — and one you’ll want to do again.
